Whah? I took the link, began watching the how-to video, a show called “Infinite Solutions,” and hilarity quickly ensued.

At first, I thought it was real — goofy looking and sounding — but real. But by the time the host started wrapping Ethernet cable around a cellie to achieve “Ethernet induction,” I knew something was horribly, horribly wrong (not the least of which was the fact that the linking site hadn’t figured out that this was a put-on). I went to the Infinite Solutions page on YouTube and watched some of their other episodes. They’re genius, a hysterical mix of cheezoid production values, just enough real information and hand-holding to suck in the ill-informed, plenty of impenetrable geekspeak, and lots and lots of good ol’ Blarney.

Each episode has a glaring Easter egg of truthiness that SHOULD tip off anybody who’s even paying half attention. For instance, on the cellphone WiFi antenna hack: your PC is supposed to magically recognize the make/model of your cellphone as part of your Network Neighborhood just by wrapping a cable around it! The magic of “Ethernet induction,” I suppose. Or in the episode on recharging alkaline batteries with other half-head batteries, where the host, Mark Erickson, turns to the camera and says: “It’s called electrical tape because it conducts electricity.”

Mark and Infinite Solutions are best known for the notorious Google TV hoax, a ridiculous rigmarole procedure to score yourself an invite to Google’s alleged TV service beta. This video had hapless users logging into their Gmail accounts dozens, even hundreds, of times trying to trigger access to the service.

What’s amazing is how pissed people get when they find out these are parodies, blaming “Mark” for scamming them, rather than recognizing it for what it is, parody, and blaming themselves for not rubbing a few critical thoughts together.

In the above video, Mark is showing you how to improve your vehicle’s breaking response by coating your tires with peanut butter. Extra crunchy for even more aggressive breaking. Now that just makes sense, doesn’t it?
